Roles

Character Breakdown

We are seeking a company of strong singing actors who are capable of playing broad physical comedy.  Age ranges as listed are approximate and subject to change.

  • Pseudolus:  A2-High G Baritone, Age 30-55.  A Roman slave, owned by Hero, seeking to win freedom by helping hero win the heart of Philia.  Requires an actor with impeccable comic sensibility, able to improvise as needed.
  • Hero:  A2 – F#4 Tenor, Age 18-25.  Son of Senex.  Handsome, innocent, and a bit dim.  In love with Philia.
  • Philia:  A3 – G5 Soprano, Age 18-25.  A virgin in the house of Marcus Lycus, and Hero’s love interest.  Very naïve and (like Hero) rather clueless.
  • Hysterium:  A2-G4 Tenor, Age 25-55.  Nervous and hapless slave of Senix.  He’s an unwitting accomplice in Pseudolus’s various schemes.
  • Senex:  Bflat – Gflat Baritone, Age 40-60.  A henpecked, sardonic Roman senator with a wandering eye.  Hero’s father and the aging master of the house.
  • Domina:  A3 – F#5, Mezzo-Soprano, Age 40-60.  Wife of Senex.  A manipulative, shrewish woman equally loathed and feared by everyone…including her husband.
  • Marcus Lycus: A2 – F4 Baritone, Age 30-60.  A purveyor of courtesans.  Rather grand in attitude, somewhat slick, borderline sleazy.
  • Erronius:  As – F4, Baritone, Age 60 – 70.  A befuddled old man who has spent the past 20 years searching for his two children who were kidnapped in infancy by pirates.
  • Miles Gloriosus:  A2-F4 Bass Baritone, Age 30-4.  A captain in the Roman army who is promised to Philia.  He is a braggart who never ceases to impress himself.  This role needs a very strong singer an equally strong physical presence.
  • The Proteans (3 males):  Flexible Ages.  Choristers who play multiple roles (slaves, citizens, soldiers, eunuchs, etc.).  Need strong, versatile actors who can move very well.  They are almost never off stage!
  • The Courtesans (6 women):  Age Range 18-30.  Slaves in the House of Marcus Lycus.  Need strong actresses who look great and dance very well.  Think “Vegas Showgirl” and you get the picture!  Each courtesan has a solo dance sequence.

About the Show

Broadway's greatest farce is light, fast-paced, witty, irreverent and one of the funniest musicals ever written. A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum takes characters and situations from classic Roman comedies and filters it through American vaudeville and burlesque.  It’s all there—frantic chases, stock characters, mistaken identities, bad puns and beautiful showgirls—all set to the tunes of Stephen Sondheim’s jauntiest score.
