Roles
  • Henry II, King of England (late 40s-50s)  A man in the last stages of his vigor but still a match for anyone and not to be underestimated.  Still very much the King and apparent to anyone who is in his presence that he is in absolute control.  Well almost.
  • Eleanor, Queen of England (late 40s-early 60s).  A woman out of legend.  Any man’s equal in power, in cunning and wit.  She is in every way Henry’s equal and it should be easy to understand why the two of them fell in love and why they can’t live together. Capable of deep affection and cruelty.
  • Alais, French Princess and Henry’s present mistress (20s) Very pretty with an honesty about her that you don’t see in anyone else in the play.  She adores Henry and is totally under his control, although she is very fond of Eleanor who by all accounts raised her from a childhood.
  • John, youngest of the princes, (early 20s) Spoiled, ill tempered, dim witted.  He is Henry’s pick to be the next king.
  • Geoffrey, middle prince (20s) No ones pick to be the next king. Smart and devious.  If no one will make him king he will find his own way.
  • Richard, oldest prince (late 20s-early 30s)  Strong and impressive.  A true warrior who is  a match for Henry physically, if not mentally.  He is Eleanor’s pick for King and her favorite.
  • Philip, King of France, (20s). Young king who just inherited the throne from his father.  He is bright and on his way up, He is not yet a match for Henry but he will be soon.

The audition will consist of readings from the script.  Please be familiar with the play.  Any questions please email carol.fisher@optonline.net.

Lion in Winter tells the story of the Plantagenet family and takes place over the Christmas holiday in 1183 in Chinon, France.  It is not a cozy holiday that awaits the family.  It is full of in fighting and threats and a struggle for the crown.  Who will come out on top? The palace is full of royals plotting and scheming against each other for the ultimate prize.  Be aware that this family may be at odds with each other but they are still a family and there is much love (if not affection) between them.

Performance dates Feb. 15-March7
