  • Martin “Grandpa” Vanderhof – (60-70’s) An eccentric, happy man who attends commencements, throws dart and collects stamps. He is always in control of the situation and shares his philosophy of life with all.
  • Penny Sycamore – (40-50s) – Martin’s daughter. A loving mother and wife who writes plays  and paints. Quick-witted and a little nutty.
  • Paul Sycamore- (40s-50s) – Penny’s husband. Kind and warm father of Alice and Essie. He manufactures fireworks in the basement.
  • Alice Sycamore – (20s) – The only “normal” family member. In love with Tony, she is embarrassed by the eccentricities of her family who she loves very much.
  • Essie Carmichael – (20-30) – Alice’s sister. She makes candy and studies ballet. After 8 years, she is still a terrible dancer. A kooky character.
  • Ed Charmichael – (20-30) – Essie’s husband. Plays the xylophone for Essie’s dances and prints anything that sounds good to him including the dinner menu.
  • Tony Kirby - (20s) – Alice’s boyfriend. Sees her family as the perfect family because they love and care about each other. Does not want the boring life his father has planned for him.
  • Anthony Kirby, Sr. – (40-50s) – A very proper man who is president of Kirby & Co. and secretly despises his job. A stuffed shirt conservative.
  • Miriam Kirby – (40-50s) – Anthony’s wife and Toy’s mother. An extremely prim and proper woman who is horrified by the goings-on in the household.
  • Boris Kolenkhof – (40-60s) – Essie’s dance teacher who escaped from Russia shortly before the Russian Revolution. He is very concerned with his Russian friends. He also is aware that Essie stinks but she loves dancing so he keeps teaching her.
  • Mr. DePinna – (40 – 60s) – the iceman who came one day and never left. He works with Paul in the basement on the fireworks.
  • Donald – (any age) – African American boyfriend of Rheba who helps around the house.
  • Rheba – (any age) – Family maid and cook. She helps Essie make her candies. Loves Donald.
  • Wilbur Henderson – (30-60) – IRS employee who comes to collect Grandpa’s unpaid taxes. Can’t understand why Grandpa won’t pay. Loses his temper out of frustration.
  • The Grand Duchess Olga Katrina – (40-60s) – Grand Duchess of Russia who fled to America and now works as a waitress. Loves to cook.
  • Gay Wellington – (30-50s) – An alcoholic actress who Penny meets on the bus and invites home to read on of her plays. Gets very drunk and passes out.
  • 3 G-Men – The Man, Jim and Mac

Please come prepared to enjoy yourself. This is a silly play with a great message. Please read the play and prepare to share your interpretation of the characters – complete with dancing and accents.
Please contact Lynne Lupfer (mrslupfer@gmail.com) or Geri Berhain (gmvb@earthlink.net) for a copy of the script.
